Ken was 14 and had been training for under a year. (since June 2001)

Ken writes here for you.

Like Tyler, Ken is a serious bodybuilder. They are both a similar age, But appear to have a different approach. For Ken's Schedule, see his webpages. He seems to have progressed very quickly, perhaps a little too fast. A 30lb gain in 7 months is a lot. If you look at his pics though, you can see that legs amount for quite a lot of that gain, which is good to see. Note by the way that the pose above here does not show the legs flexed! Refer to the new posing page.

I started working out when I turned 14 last June (2001).

The pic below is of another 14 yr old, as a comparison. He is not as big as Ken, but overall balance is clear to see.

Jeremy at 14, not Ken .

My name is Ken and I'm a 14 year old Body Builder from Suffolk Virginia. I've been working out seriously since this June (2001) and in that time my weight has gone from 120 pounds to 150! I've been on an extremely heavy workout schedule but it seems to have paid off. Check out my Workout Routine on the link below as well as my Photo Gallery. I've also included a Progress Page to set my goals and chart my progress. You can appear on my guest page too!

My other interests are skate-boarding, wrestling, playing electric and bass guitar. I hope to be emergency physician and major in college in molecular genetics.

Please e-mail if you have any comments on my website, workout routine or if you just want to talk bodybuilding.

Perhaps we can get Ken to do the same pose? Bear in mind there are at least four years between them! I have not, as yet been able to get a pic of Sergei at the same age, but there should be one out there. The building up of a photo series is something I would recommend to anyone working on improving their physique. Remember too that wellbeing and posture also benefit!

Note on both Ken's pics that the right leg muscles are tensed, including the calf. It is good to see that Ken is exercising all his body in a balanced way. Leg poses have to be repeated for each leg.

Comment on Ken (14.5)

If you visit Ken's pages, you will note that his approach is to work a particular bodypart area HARD at a session. This naturally will give dramatic results in that area. As you may guess by looking at the new pic below, legs are a "favourite bodypart"! A glance at the new pic below shows exceptional Quads for 14.5 years! Well done Ken!

Re pics. It is not easy to take them yourself, but Ken has done a good job here too!

A point worth noting here is that Ken does NOT (as far as his schedule shows) use heavy free weight squats etc. He mentions machines in his listing, ( see his site) which is a better approach for the younger guy, at least until full height is reached or neared. There is a lot of contradictory comment re the use of heavy squats etc, but there are various other options which concentrate the effort where it is intended, i.e the legs, not the spine! See below.

A fresh comment from Ken

The BIGGEST note I want to add is to frequently (every month or so) change the exercises performed in your workout. As on Tyler's page, it says that this can slow down or completely stop growth. This is perhaps the most common mistake any lifter can make next to overtraining.

The slowdown comment was actually mine!

My training history? see site.

"Preacher curl" (1st right) and Triceps extension. (far right). Both are aimed at isolating the intended muscle. It is too easy to swing a barbell when curling. The Preacher stand stops this. Also in the triceps extension the elbow bends only. This can also be done in a seated position.

Note, Ken is using wrist straps here as support.

The bar is curled from straight arm to full raise, which is the vertical position in this case.

The weight is lowered behind the head without moving the upper arms.

Barbell Shrugs. Here Ken is using a heavy bar on stands, with "catch points at various levels. It can also be used for squats and pressing. The "shug" with overhand grip does not cover much distance, since only the shoulders are raised. Hold at maximum raise before slowly lowering.

Posing is an artform in itself. Sergei has had a lot of practice, As I show now in a new posing gallery.

Note the symmetrical calf development here. Serious builders neglect calves at their peril! The pose is actually demonstrating the "calf raise" too.

New comment from Ken.

Often, when I have a partner equal to me in size and strength, we challenge each other to do a "breakdown". Its really a work-up then break down, because we go from, say 1-12 then back down to 1. Its performed by one person do one set of 1 then the other do that same set with the same weight, then just continuing up (e.g. I do one, you do one. I do two, you do two and so on.). This is only one of the many techniques I use and I have found that these techniques break you from your common routine of reps and sets and add a shock to your muscle growth.

Compare this pic with the logo pic top left on this page. Ken has made some gains in size or definition in almost all the muscles tensed in this pose.

This pose also shows progress, though the lighting flare is a little confusing.

Bigger or simply better toned?

The use of weights can have these two effects.
